fungi, like Cryptococcus neoformans, can cause serious infection and disease in immune-compromised patients. these encapsulated yeast cells (stained bright pink in the above image) are phagocytosed by alveolar macrophages, but are typically capable of surviving phagocytosis, and go on as an intracellular pathogen within the macrophage and within alveoli.
